Or, In Which The Hague Atones For Last Time’s Paltry Effort
Daria: Still reading Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Great read but needs time to process. Coates’s outlook is bleak at times but also very honest and thought-provoking, a gripping read. Reading his memoir beforehand was insightful. For a lighter note to read in the evening I just started in Shadowshaper by Daniel José Older. Tipped by Tiemen. It’s a fast-paced YA fantasy about a young graffiti artist and her magical adventures on the streets of Brooklyn. Also now reading The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness.
Speaking of Patrick Ness: come skype with him on October 29th in the ABC Treehouse in Amsterdam!
Jitse: Trashed by Derf Backderf.
Jesse: The Book of Strange New Things by Michel Faber. It’s about a pastor who goes to a different planet to preach the word of God to the locals. It sounds crazy and it is at that, but it’s written in a very believable way. Good book!
Maarten: Read during my vacation: The Art of Detection by Laurie L. King. The chairman of a Sherlock-Holmes-society gets killed, a lost and recovered Doyle-story (or is it…), and a bit-cliché-procedural-plot. The ‘reproduction’ of the ‘lost’ Holmes-story really is the best part of this book, as it should be…
Ester: Part four in the Booktown Mystery series: Chapter & Hearse by Lorna Barrett. Now that I’m kinda used to the, in my opinion, horrible first names of the main characters, I’m quite enjoying myself with this series.
Deborah: During my breaks I’m reading The Alchemist.
JeroenW: Breakfast at Sotheby’s: An A-Z of the Art World by Philip Hook.
Sophie: Rat Queens, vol. 1: Sass and Sorcery by Kurtis J. Wiebe and Roc Upchurch. Loads of fun. Loved the art, loved the interaction, loved the characters. A Cruel Bird Came to the Nest and Looked In by Magnus Mills. Very odd, but very interesting, and quite political if you want it to be. Ancillary Mercy by Ann Leckie. I loved the previous two books (Justice and Sword) so I am very eager to see where this one is headed, and how Leckie will finish off the trilogy. I’m 3/4 of the way through and I’m still not sure which way the story will flip!
