Tom: De Wondere Wereld van de Taal by Charles Berlitz (member of the famous language-books-publishing family). Unfortunately in a (very) disappointing Dutch translation. I once got it from a Kringloop store, and now I’m finally reading it. Entertaining book about language and languages, with lots of interesting tidbits. Sadly there are quite a few mistakes in there – and those are only the mistakes I notice because I happen to know a little bit about that particular language. Interestingly enough, the language ‘Nederlands’ is translated as ‘Hollands’. Still, despite all these strange errors I’m enjoying the book! I’m also reading The Other, an essay byRyszard Kapuscinski.
Iris: The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman.
Daniele: I had never read a graphic novel before, so I decided to give Saga a try. Finished volume 1, 2 and 3 in the blink of an eye. Very nice drawings and great characters! I’m also reading a book in Dutch, De omwegen by Jeroen Theunissen (Flemish author), and I like it a lot so far!
Martijn: Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits by David Wong. Good action, well-written, author’s having a lot of fun with the futuristic looks and gadgets of the city Tabula Ra$a, and at times also funny. Highly enjoyable. I think it’s trying to be a little bit too smart for its own good though… Also reading Another Man’s Moccasins by Craig Johnson.
Jouke: My Fight / Your Fight by Ronda Rousey, Dead Mountain: The Untold True Story of the Dyatlov Pass Incident by Donnie Eichar, and The Magician’s Land by Lev Grossman.
Renate: I Saw a Man by Owen Sheers.
Sophie: The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Bryna (the lady who edits our monthly news mailing) would have edited the bejesus out of him. Also, The Long Way Home by Louise Penny. Chief-Inspector Armand Gamache #10, and I’m afraid to say that I’m beginning to tire of Penny’s writing style. I don’t know how much longer my love for Armand will be able to sustain me. Breaks my heart to admit this, though.
There are ebooks available for The Subtle Knife, Saga, vol. 1, vol. 2, and vol. 3, Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits, Another Man’s Moccasins, My Fight / Your Fight, Dead Mountain, The Magician’s Land, I Saw a Man, The Scarlet Letter, and The Long Way Home.
