We are proud and excited to announce that ABC is the new partner of the John Adams Institute (JAI)! We’ll be selling books at their events and host some of their authors in our stores. And take note ABC Booklover Card holders: tickets to events are discounted for you (while supplies last; each event will have a limited amount available).
As listed on their website, “the John Adams Institute provides an independent podium for American culture in the Netherlands. For three decades, we have brought the best and the brightest of American thinking from the fields of literature, politics, history, and technology. Love it or hate it, what happens in the United States is of continuing relevance for the rest of the world. We host a number of public events with the goal of examining cultural phenomena related to the United States, be that of national or international concern.”
Some of their recent speakers include Russell Shorto, Tim Walz, and Timothy Snyder. They also host discussions about hot and/or contentious topics such as “Land of the Free?” and “Beyond the Water’s Edge: Charting a New Course for America” regularly.
Our first collaboration will be next week on 17 June. Sociologist Ruha Benjamin, author of Imagination, will hold a keynote talk about the myth of neutral tech and “the New Jim Code”. Afterwards she will be joined by Marietje Schaake (The Tech Coup) and Robin Aïsha Pocornie for a panel discussion on “Who Owns the Future?” Full details and tickets can be found here. If you have an ABC Booklover Card you can get a ticket for the discounted price of €15 (while supplies last, as of this moment only 7 tickets left at that price!).
Their fall program is not yet finalized but the speakers they do have planned are positively scrumptious: Nate Silver (The Signal and the Noise, On the Edge), Nikole Hannah-Jones (The 1619 Project), and Daniel Kraus (Pay the Piper, Whalefall – one of our Top 100 Tips)!
