Once we get past the first 45 minutes of Michiel Vos on the stage of the DeLaMar, interviewing Fran Lebowitz, the evening can finally begin. For the remaining 45, she engages the sold-out house from behind a dark-wooden lectern, which gives the whole thing something of a college lecture feel. What follows is an evening of wit and humor. But mostly, it becomes a warm visit with a feisty old rebel.

It is no big shock to learn that Fran thinks Trump is something of a clown, that New York City is actually at the center of the universe, or that she is not friends with Patti Smith. Though there was one quote she left us with, which she no doubt had saved up specifically for us, her local booksellers, to take home that evening. It was some spin-off about Oprah Winfrey ‘seeing’ herself in the books she plugs. Well, according to Fran, “a book must never be a mirror, but a window.” We liked that.
