Heyo! Happy 2024, first of all, may it be a very bookish and kind year to you and yours. To celebrate this new year we’re bringing back an Olde Blogge favorite (to write, in any case): the Bookbits, bookish news in small bites. We hope you’ll enjoy them throughout the coming year.
- In case you need more Best of 2023 lists (besides our Staff Favorites, of course): here are the best books of 2023 according to the Powells Books staff, the Guardian, and – if you can afford the paywall – the New York Times (there’s their 100 Notables list and the 10 Best).
- If you’re more of a looking-ahead-kind-of-person: here are some eagerly anticipated titles according to Literary Hub, Waterstones, and the Guardian again. We’re working on our own hotly-anticipated titles, too, which will be on this blog soon!
- We always love us a quiz, and the Guardian has the Bumper Books Quiz of 2023! I scored a paltry 23 out of 53.
- Here’s a new column we’re looking forward to: Am I the Literary A**hole? Etiquette and advice for writers (and everyone else). They’re taking questions now, column to start at the end of the month.
- And finally, English-language book events this month around the country: local author Natali Simmonds discusses her new book Good Girls Die Last at ABC The Hague on the 19th, our Book Chats book club discusses Killers of a Certain Age on the 19th, the annual Winternachten Festival in The Hague takes place from 18-21 January, and Franklin Foer will present his book The Last Politician at JAI on the 31st.
