We decided to play the Q&A game with the ABC staff, and asked all sorts of bookish questions. In the coming weeks we will be posting their (sometimes cheeky!) answers here on the blog, so you can learn a little more about us.

Enjoy!

This time around we talk to Damla, one of our newbies who is already conquering the Languages section in The Hague.

What are your top 3 favorite books or authors?
I feel like it is a torturous task for any self-proclaimed bookworm to choose favorite authors or books! But that being said, V.E. Schwab (she can do no wrong in my eyes – anything she writes, I will race to pick up) and Haruki Murakami (he is THE name for magical realism in contemporary literature with his fantastically weird and complex stories) are my go-to names.
I can’t choose a favorite third author, and will instead share an all-time favorite book: Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. It is the perfect mix of fantasy and architecture for me.

What is your favorite genre to read?
I am very much a mood reader, so the genres I read can vary drastically. But I do have a special place in my heart for fantasy (who can resist a swift escape from our reality to a land with magic where dragons, curses, elves, or beasts might be around any corner?)

What is your favorite bookish animal?
As much as I claim myself to be a dog person, cats have to be the perfect companions both in a fictional sense and physically to curl up with you and your book. And if it can be a giant cat like Fenestra from the Nevermoor series, even better.
Or dragons. Actually, definitely the dragons.

Do you have any reading tips for our customers?
This is a bit unconventional, but rather than music, I always read with an ASMR-type ambiance background noise while reading, usually of rain. The white noise helps me to switch off other noises around me and really focus on the book. Bonus points for the cozy vibes, too.

What non-book item at ABC can you not pass by without looking at it?
The buildable Book Nooks! I would buy every single one of them if I had the space at home. It is the perfect combination of my love of books and architecture.

What is your favorite part of being a bookseller?
Honestly, I really enjoy every aspect of the work although I am quite new to everything. But my favorite task would be helping the customers, whether on one one one, at the till, or through special orders. It is always fascinating to me to see what our customers are reading!
