Books continue to be excellent source material, and the last few months of this year promise some very exciting adaptations! Below is just a selection of what you will soon be able to watch on the small or big screen.

The Dog Stars by Peter Heller

Based on Peter Heller’s book by the same name, The Dog Stars follows Hig, who somehow survived a flu pandemic that killed everyone he knows. He lives in isolation with his dog and a gun-toting companion, until one day, a transmission gives them hope for a better life and they set out in search of it.

The Book of Magic by Alice Hoffman

Upcoming September, the sequel to the cult classic movie Practical Magic, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, will be released. The movie is based on Alice Hoffman’s second book in the series, The Book of Magic, and it’s set 25 years after the events of the first movie. The Owens family will finally try to break the curse that’s been haunting their family for generations, in order to save the next generation of witches.

Carrie by Stephen King

Stephen King’s classic horror story has been adapted into a miniseries, airing in October. It follows Carrie as she navigates high school after her father’s death, and comes to terms with her new telekinetic powers. Since Carrie is one of King’s shortest books, the eight-episode series will expand on Carrie’s story and build something new, that hasn’t been done before.

Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Jane Austen’s works continue to inspire, as a new movie adaptation of the iconic story will be out in October. Daisy Edgar-Jones (from another popular book-to-screen adaptation, Normal People), stars as Elinor Dashwood. Late 2026 will also see another “progressive” TV adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, written by Dolly Alderton.

Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro

Also out in October is Kazuo Ishiguro’s critically acclaimed dystopian science fiction novel, Klara and the Sun, which was longlisted for the Booker Prize in 2021. Klara and the Sun asks what it means to be human, which is probably a question that’s on lots of people’s minds.

Doctor Doom: Books of Doom by Ed Brubaker and Pablo Raimondi

For those who are looking to fill a Barbenheimer-sized hole in their life, December might have what you’re looking for. Both Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three will be released on the same day – December 18th! We’ve covered the Dune adaptations here and more in depth hereAvengers: Doomsday will be bringing a lot of Marvel characters and storylines together, but a good place to start reading would be Doctor Doom: Books of Doom.

East of Eden by John Steinbeck

It has been almost four years in the making, but the TV-series based on John Steinbeck’s East of Eden will finally be available late this fall. Steinbeck considered the family drama his magnum opus, and the TV-series promises to be as ambitious as the novel. It will star Florence Pugh as a member of the Trask family, whose lives are intertwined with the Hamilton family.
